Carney Hospital has announced the accreditation of a new residency program for training physicians in Family Medicine by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Beginning in 2014, Carney Hospital will prepare primary care physicians in the delivery of compassionate, cutting-edge care for the residents of Dorchester and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Family physicians provide comprehensive and coordinated primary care for individuals and entire families, including men, women, children and adolescents. In their outpatient practice, family physicians combine the latest technology and research findings with the personal touch of traditional general medicine. These specially trained doctors take a holistic approach to patient care, considering physical, environmental, behavioral and social factors affecting their patients’ health and well-being.
Continuing Carney Hospital’s long tradition of providing graduate medical education and training, the Family Medicine Residency Program represents an important strategic accomplishment for the hospital and for Steward Health Care. The addition of a Family Medicine Residency will allow Carney Hospital to prepare the next generation of talented, young physicians, and to develop primary care physicians for Carney Hospital’s own medical staff, as well as the medical staffs of other Steward Health Care hospitals.
The department is currently recruiting additional faculty physicians to see patients and teach residents, and Carney Hospital will interview candidates graduating from top-quality medical schools to matriculate its first class of resident physicians in July 2014.
