Carney Hospital's pulmonary medicine service has a long history of excellence in the delivery of high quality care to patients with all types of pulmonary disease. Special expertise is provided in the care of patients with asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia, lung cancer, sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. The service also specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with breathing-related sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. Our Center for Sleep Medicine is equipped with a complete sleep laboratory and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of sleep experts who provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment plans. The laboratory provides technical support, including a full range of pulmonary function testing, bronchoprovocation testing, and blood gas analysis.
Critically ill patients require specialized care delivered by highly trained physicians known as intensivists. At Carney Hospital, our ICU is staffed by skilled intensivists who provide the highest level of critical care along with a multidisciplinary team to meet our patients' needs.
|Nicholas James, DO, is an attending physician with the Carney Hospital Pulmonary Medicine Department. Dr. James completed fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine with the Lahey Health and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. He attended medical school at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio and completed his residency in Internal Medicine with SUMMA Health System/Northeastern Ohio in Akron, Ohio.|
Heidi O'Connor, MD, serves as the department chair of pulmonary medicine. Dr. O'Connor graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed a residency in internal medicine, a chief residency year and a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Tufts Medical Center. She is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care and sleep medicine.
Alexander White, MD, serves as Carney Hospital's vice president of Medical Affairs in addition to his role in pulmonary medicine. Dr. White earned a degree in microbiology and his medical degree from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He completed postgraduate medical training with Dr. Steeven's Hospital in Dublin, his medical residency at the Federated Dublin Voluntary Hospitals and a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. White is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care and sleep medicine.
